The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, is assuring sugarcane farmers across the country that the government is doing everything possible to ensure a smooth harvesting season and uninterrupted cane supply to the mills.
As of 7 July 2025, all three sugar mills in Fiji have collectively crushed 164,807 tonnes of cane โ a significant increase of 25,748 tonnes compared to the 139,059 tonnes crushed during the same period in 2024. This represents an 18.5% increase, signaling a strong and positive start to the 2025 crushing season.
While some initial mechanical and operational issues were encountered, as is typical in the early stages of the season, mill operations have since stabilized, and crushing is progressing efficiently.
Minister Singh commended all industry stakeholders for their continued cooperation under the leadership of the new Permanent Secretary for the Sugar Industry.
โThe mills are running well. Although we may face some minor disruptions between now and the end of the season, I am confident that the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has a capable team in place to manage any challenges that arise,โ said Minister Singh.
“An 18.5% increase in cane crushed early in the season means more income flowing into cane belt communities and stronger prospects for our sugar exports,” He said.
Minister Singh further noted that, following the successful passage of the national budget, he plans to visit farming communities across the country to discuss the effective use of the grants and subsidies provided this year. He also emphasized the importance of all stakeholders continuing to work collaboratively to ensure the cane is harvested and delivered on time.
Our vision is to create a modern, economically viable and sustainable sugar industry in Fiji.
To ensure the successful implementation of sugar cane reforms and ensure timely, effective and efficient delivery of services to relevant stakeholders for a viable sugarcane industry.
