The Hon. Minister for Multi Ethnic Affairs & Sugar Industry; Mr. Charan Jeath Singh together with the Fiji delegation, met with Mr. Maneesh Gobin, the Minister of Agro-Industry & Food Security of the Republic of Mauritius at Port Louis, Mauritius.
The meeting focused on the development of the sugar and agro-based industry; future of sugar industry, value addition, research & developments. Minister Gobin discussed some strategic approaches adopted to overcome challenges such as expiry of European Union preferential price for the African, Caribbean & Pacific Group of States.
In this meeting, mutual cooperation between Fiji & Mauritius was highlighted. The two small island states can have exchanges in matters relating to sugar industry such as sharing of expertise, trainings, schemes and subsidies to establish best practices and for the sugar industry to prosper. Minister Gobin emphasized the need for small island states to join forces to better represent themselves on international forums.
Minister Singh highlighted that Fiji is looking forward in working with the Republic of Mauritius to develop learnings and better approaches of growing the sugar industry.
