The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs & Sugar Industry, Hon Charan Jeath Singh, together with the Fiji-delegation met with the Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Home Affairs and External Communications and Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands & Territorial Integrity of Mauritius, Mr. Pravin Kumar Jugnauth at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.
Hon. Singh conveyed warm greetings of the Prime Minister of Fiji to Hon Prime Minister Jugnauth and thanked him for availing his valuable time. Minister Singh briefed on the rationale behind the visit to Mauritius and on the meetings with all key Sugar Industry Stakeholders of Mauritius. The sugar industry in Mauritius has faced many challenges such as climate change and shortage of labor but has proven its resilience with support from the Government.
The discussions focused on the common issues between Mauritius and Fiji’s Sugar Industry. Both countries draw similar history concerning the establishment of the sugar industry and the challenges faced.
Hon Singh requested for technical expertise for sugar refinery and ethanol projects, highlighting Fiji’s keen interest in learning from the experiences & success of Mauritian Sugar Industry.
Other discussions focused on the large Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the protection required for the marine resources for small state developing countries like Fiji and Mauritius.
