Historic High in Cane Payment

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs & Sugar Industry assures of his continued support to the Sugar Cane Industry, particularly the Farmers

The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs & Sugar Industry, led by Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, reaffirms the government’s steadfast commitment to the sugarcane farming community. In accordance with the promises made to ordinary Fijians, the government continues to deliver assistance in key areas with the objectives to enhance livelihoods of sugarcane farmers across the nation.

In May 2024, farmers had received $21.75/ton taking the 2023 crop payment to an unprecedented amount of $101.08 per ton—the highest payment ever recorded. While an additional $2.57 per ton had been scheduled to be paid out before Diwali, the government, recognizing the immense challenges posed by climate change and the need to sustain the sugar industry, has decided to go even further. To provide additional relief and motivation, the government will top-up the cane payment by an additional $1.43 per ton, bringing the final payout to $4 per ton. This brings the total cane payment to a historic $105.08 per ton—an all-time historic high in Fiji’s sugarcane industry.

Hon. Charan Jeath Singh emphasised that, in light of the severe adversities’ that farmers have encountered due to the impacts of climate change, increasing production has been a formidable challenge. The cane payment will not only assist farmers in meeting their daily needs but will also strengthen their efforts to increase production. Moreover, with Diwali approaching, this timely payment will offer our hardworking farmers a much-needed reason to rejoice and celebrate their dedication and resilience.

We remain dedicated to working collaboratively with farmers, industry stakeholders, and relevant organizations to ensure the sustainability and prosperity of Fiji’s sugarcane sector. Through these continued efforts, the government is determined to fulfill its promises to ordinary Fijians, driving progress and fostering resilience in the industry.
