In line with the directive of the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry and the firm commitment from the Minister for Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Biman Prasad, the work is progressing steadily to reopen the rail loop serving the greater Tavua area.
As part of the Ministryโs oversight, the Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Dr. Vinesh Kumar deployed Senior Economic Planning Officer, Mr. Rusiate Veikoso, to assess on-ground progress. Accompanied by Mr. Kamal Singh, FSC Civil Engineer- Rarawai the duo braved the intense heat and undertook an 8-kilometre walk along the rail line to inspect critical sections of the track.
During the visit, they witnessed teams actively engaged in maintenance along key stretches, including the “Maqere Roll” section and the structurally significant Tavua Bridge No. 30, which both require major repairs before the rail can be reopened.
The field team reported back that restoration works are progressing well, with strong coordination between the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and Ministry officials. The target is to complete all necessary repairs and have the rail loop operational within the next three weeks.
โThis project is more than just railโitโs about restoring efficient and affordable cane transport for our growers in the Tavua region. We appreciate the dedication of our officers and FSC field staff who are working tirelessly to get this done.โ Said Dr. Vinesh Kumar
The reopening of the rail loop is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs for farmers, improve delivery times to the mill, and ease the logistical burden during the peak harvesting period.
This initiative reflects the Governmentโs ongoing commitment to reviving and modernising Fijiโs sugar industry, ensuring that no farming community is left behind.
Our vision is to create a modern, economically viable and sustainable sugar industry in Fiji.
To ensure the successful implementation of sugar cane reforms and ensure timely, effective and efficient delivery of services to relevant stakeholders for a viable sugarcane industry.
