In a continued effort to boost sugarcane production and strengthen support for sugarcane farmers, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, handed over the grants to the 32 sugarcane farmers under the New Farmers Assistance Program in Labasa.
While handing over the grant to the recipients in Labasa on Saturday (14/06/25), Minister Hon. Singh reiterated the governmentโs commitment and continued support to the sugar Industry and sugarcane farmers.
Minister Singh said, the grant program is part of the Ministryโs plan to empower sugarcane farmers by assisting them in securing land leases, providing financial assistance for farm operations, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
โWe are continuing with the distribution of grants under the New Farmers and Lease Premium Program. So far in this financial year, 461 farmers have already received support, and many more will benefit in the coming months,โ he said.
โThis program is especially important as it helps farmers secure land leases โ giving them stability and the confidence to invest in and expand their farms for long-term sustainability,โ said Minister Singh.
One of the recipients, Bal Sanju Reddy of the Wainikoro sector, received a grant of $4,185 toward lease renewal. He thanked the government for its timely support.
โThis grant will ease the burden of farmers in terms of paying loans to the Sugarcane Growers Fund. I thank the government of the day for assisting farmers. It will help me pay off my loan,โ he said.
