To support sugarcane farmers in Northern Division, the Ministry of Sugar Industry has assisted 61 farmers in Seaqaqa, Bucaisau, and Wainikoro through “New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program” aimed at enhancing sugarcane productivity.
While handing over the grant agreement to Farmers, Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Hon. Charan Jeath Singh reiterated Ministry’s commitment to offering comprehensive support to farmers, including technical guidance and other incentives aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices.
“This program is designed to alleviate financial burdens and encourage farmers to maximize their yields, ultimately boosting overall sugarcane production,” said Mr. Singh. “Through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program, eligible farmers receive financial support equivalent to 30% of the cost of lease renewals or a maximum of $7,500, whichever is lower,” said Hon. Singh.
Minister Singh alluded that farmers should utilize these incentives to leverage their farm operation effectively to enhance output and contribute to the industry’s growth. Out of the 61 assisted farmers, 48 have benefited from grants under the New Farmers program, while 13 have received support for lease renewals. 29-year-old Shamal Chand of Vunika Labasa acknowledged the government’s initiative to support the new farmers venturing into sugarcane farming.“This grant which I received will ease my burden to repay my loan. This will help my family to do some extra savings. My savings will not be used to pay loan repayment,” he said.
