The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, today chaired the third Steering Committee Meeting for the construction of the Labasa By-Pass Road, attended by the key stakeholders and service providers including Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL), Energy Fiji Limited (EFL), and relevant Government Ministries.

The purpose of the meeting was to gain insight into the key developments of the projects and to assess the progress with stakeholders to ensure its timely implementation.

โ€œThe whole reason for todayโ€™s meeting was to inform the public how serious we are about this project and how far weโ€™ve come since the last two meetings. I am satisfied with the work FRA has done so far, and their presentation today showed a clear plan for what they intend to deliver.โ€ Said Minister Singh.

Minister Singh acknowledged the collaborative efforts of all service providers and government agencies involved, noting that all stakeholders are working diligently to support the projectโ€™s delivery.

โ€œThe relocation of existing services poses a significant challenge and must be well-coordinated and carefully planned for its long-term sustainability,โ€ he added.

Minister Singh stated that the increasing traffic congestion in Labasa is a major concern that needs to be addressed, particularly in light of the ongoing developments.

โ€œThe people should be thankful to the current Coalition Governmentโ€”we are not just making promises, we are working to deliver. The Hon. Prime Minister has made it clear that these projects must commence and be completed for the benefit of the people.โ€ said Minister Singh.

โ€œLabasaโ€™s economy is growing, and with it, numerous development projects have emerged. Traffic congestion has become a serious issue, particularly for those travelling from the airport side into town, as they spend about two hours during peak hours.โ€ He added.

Minister Singh added that the new bypass road may not fully solve all traffic issues, but it is a vital solution that will help alleviate congestion, with longer-term infrastructure planning already under consideration.
